I.
Call of the Meeting to
Order:
President Behrman called the meeting to order at
3:30 pm.
II.
Informal Statements &
Proposals:
A. Senator Roussel, WSU AAUP Chair, announced
the AAUP Higher Education Day will be February 10. It is a chance for
faculty to share their concerns with legislators.
B. Senator Brooks would like the Senate to revisit the plus/minus grading system and circulated information -- "I would like the Faculty Senate to (eventually) discuss the idea of presenting faculty with the option of using both straight (A,B,C,D,F,) AND Plus/Minus grades. In the past we have debated using EITHER straight OR plus/minus grades, but in this discussion we would envision a system where each faculty member would designated one of these grading systems. In this way, those who favor one system would not preclude those who favor the other from using it. The Course catalog would indicate which classes are to use which system, and a rule would make mandatory that course syllabi also designated a grading system. As in the past, this idea meets with divided opinions, but it would offer a choice that previous proposals have not."
C. Senator Riordan announced that Senator Gill-Hopple had left the University and said Nursing would submit a replacement name to the Rules Committee for confirmation.
D. President Behrman announced that Senator Herzog had resigned from the Senate and from Executive Committee. She requested nominations for her replacement on the Executive Committee and announced the election will be held at the next meeting.
E. Senator Klunder expressed concern about the use of Social Security numbers being printed on pay information. VPAA&R Kindrick agreed with his concerns. Senator Klunder, Hershfield, 2nd. presented the following: Be it resolved that the Faculty Senate of Wichita State University request that the use of Social Security numbers in their entirety do not appear on any Wichita State University correspondence or documents, including pay statements. Accepted.
F. President Behrman announced that the Watkins Lecture for Physics speaker, Dr. Maria Spiropulu from Fermilab, will be presenting at Hubbard 211, at 5:30pm, 1/26/04 and Jabara 127 , 1:00 on 1/27/04.

F.
