STATUS REPORT SPRING 2003
The Faculty Senate Ad Hoc Technology Committee met last spring to review its charge and had plans to begin work in the fall. In the fall, the University Technology Committee formed two subcommittees to develop an IT plan for the university. Two members of the Faculty Senate Ad Hoc Technology Committee were asked to chair the Academic Subcommittee of the University Technology Committee while 2 others on the Senate committee were asked to serve. That work was complete in December with a draft report sent out for comment in March/April 2003. Faculty Senate received a copy for comment.
Rather than duplicating the work of that committee, we suspended meetings until spring, 2003, when their work was completed. Recent plans include interviews with department chairs that focus on technology specific to those departments to occur in summer 2003 and a survey generated from that information and other answers needed to be sent to all chairs in the fall to complete with department faculty.
From that information the committee will make recommendations to the Faculty Senate and CIO in the Office of Academic Affairs & Research
CHARGE
Survey faculty regarding the use of technology in teaching (preparation for teaching, instruction, grading, courseware), scholarship and service
See what types of training has been provided in the past 2 years and by whom, and what is needed
Check convenient availability of and purpose of use for various
technologies. Consider these:
Computer, printers
Internet or web-based materials
Multimedia (scanners, digital cameras, CD-ROM)
Software packages for word processing, spreadsheets, databases
Teaching tools (gradebook, blackboard)
E-mail
Presentation software, reference tools
Content specific software
Portfolio tools (e.g. HyperStudio)
Mobile Wireless computing
Other
Seek information about the level of adoption for use of
technology in instruction
1. Awareness: I am aware that technology exists but have not used it
perhaps I'm even avoiding it. I am anxious about the prospect of using computers
or other forms of technology in my classroom
2. Learning the process: I am currently trying to learn the basics. I am
sometimes frustrated using computers/technology. I lack confidence when using
computers or other forms of technology.
3. Understanding and application of the process: I am beginning to
understand the process of using technology and can think of specific tasks in
which it might be useful.
4. Familiarity & Confidence: I am gaining a sense of confidence in using
the computer or other forms of technology for specific tasks. I am starting to
feel comfortable.
5. Adaptation to other contexts: I think about technology as a tool to
help me and am no longer concerned about its use. I can use it in many
applications to prepare for and involve students in instruction.
6. Creative application to new contexts: I can apply what I know about
technology in the classroom. I am able to use it as a tool to involve students
in innovative ways. I frequently integrate technology into the way that I
involve students in instruction.
