Wichita State University Faculty Senate Minutes of the meeting Monday, November 22, 2004

Summary of Action:
     1.  Accepted the following nominations from the Rules Committee:

                General Education Committee: Bill Miles, Business (07)

                University Admissions Advisory Committee:  Richard Alltizer, Business    

                Senator from LAS Math/Natural Sciences:  Zigi Sun (06)
       2.   Received the proposal from the Library Committee and sent it to Executive & Planning & Budget Committees for action
       3.  Accepted the WSU-ICAA Missed Class Policy from Academic Affairs Committee
        4.  Accepted the revisions to Handbook for Faculty, Chapter 4

      

I.       Call of the Meeting to Order President Klunder called the meeting to order at 3:30 pm.
 

II.    Informal Statements & Proposals: none
 

III. Approval of the minutes Minutes of  November 8, 2004, accepted as amended.

 

IV.  President’s Report: 
President Klunder reported on the following:
    1. KBOR --  Concurrent Enrollment, SOCOA has set
minimal requirements for Instructors --  They are to have either a MA with 18 hours in the field they are teaching, or they must give a final exam based on the same grading scale, etc., used in the institutions giving credit in the same course on campus.  they wanted ACT of 21 or more but decided to that institutions would establish appropriate test scores.
    2. President Klunder asked for recommendations for NCA Steering Committee. Jeri Carroll, Nick Smith, Frank Rokosz, Don Malzahn, David Soles
Kathy Moore-Jansen and Mary Koehn were recommended.
    3. Faculty Tuition Assistance has moved to COPS with enabling legislation. Each campus would develop its own policy.
    4. Holiday Gathering is Dec. 6, 2:30-4:30pm, Woodman Center and encouraged all Senators to attend.
    5. Bookstore information is still be gathered.

      VI.  New Business:       
           A. Eric Sexton, Director of Government Relations, WSU, presented material on behalf of the Visioneering Wichita Steering Committee. He covered ideas for Wichita in 10 years in the future, explained the metropolitan statistical area (Harvey, Butler, Summer & Sedgwick), and explained the process so far. He discussed the Case for Change.  Education and the workforce are key components for success in our region. 55% of individuals in Wichita have some higher education. 

               

VII.  Old Business: 
A.  Handbook for Faculty, Chapter 4: 
accepted revisions
B.  Proposed revisions to the Grievance Policy --
  after extended discussion the proposals were returned to Executive Committee for further study.
