Wichita State University Faculty Senate Minutes of the meeting Monday, April 25, 2005

Summary of Action:
    1.  Accepted the annual reports from:      Exceptions

    2.  Accepted the letter to LAS Dean re: teaching of Latin & Greek from Executive Committee
    3. Accepted the revisions to Handbook for Faculty Chapter 3 and new revisions to Chapter 2
    4.  Accepted the revisions to the Constitution of the Faculty Senate, Article III
 

I.       Call of the Meeting to Order President Klunder called the meeting to order at 3:30 pm.
 

II.    Informal Statements & Proposals:
Senator Carruthers suggested a task force be created to study the various pay scales for part-time lecturers to be sure that their interests/rights are protected. It was moved by Senator Lancaster (2nd - Ross) that this be studied by the Faculty Affairs Committee.  President Klunder said that Faculty Affairs would also be looking at the Faculty of Distinction criteria.   Senator Lancaster offered congratulations to the Lady Bowlers - 1st place - and the WSU Cheer Squad -2nd place- in national competitions
 

III. Approval of the minutes Minutes of April 11, 2005, accepted as presented

 

IV.  President’s Report: 
 President Klunder announced: 
    At the April KBOR meeting, COCOA heard the 1st reading on the BS Forensic Science degree proposal.  He also noted the Regents will fund the Performance Agreement Goals.  The tuition assistance proposal was accepted by the Fiscal Affairs committee and will go to the Board.  Concurrent Enrollment was again discussed.
 

      V. Committee Reports:  
            A.  Faculty Senate Standing Committee annual reports --
  See summary of action.
            B.  Executive Committee --  Presented a draft of a letter to be sent to LAS Dean Bischoff encouraging the continued teaching of Latin and Greek.  The letter was accepted with a note that WSU is the only state university  to offer certification in the teaching of Latin and Greek

           

VII.  Old Business:

        A.  Handbook for Faculty, Chapter 3, revisions:  All revisions were accepted by the senate as well as an amendment to 3.176 / External Reviews, #5 & 6 -- Senator Lancaster moved (2nd, Senator Griffin) to remove the word "primary".
 

VI.  Old Business:  order was adjusted
B.  Constitution of the Faculty Senate, Article III -- 
Senator Ross moved (2nd Senator Hodson) acceptance of the revisions.  Passed
C.  Handbook for Faculty, Chapter 2, University Governance revisions:  It was moved and seconded that the Senate accept the revisions.  All Handbook for Faculty Proposed revisions will now go to the General Faculty for acceptance May 10, 2005.
B.  NCAA  update --
Professor Perline presented a brief update on the NCAA Certification study and noted information can be found at GOSCHOCKERS.COM.  He noted that 89% of all WSU Athletes who use their full eligibility, graduate from the University.
A.  Emory Lindquist Honors Program update:  A.J. Mandt, Honors Director, presented information about the Honors recruitment.  He noted that approximately 1/2 of all incoming freshman are Honors eligible. In Fall 2005,  five new National Merit Finalists are enrolled as Full-time, First time-Freshman, that Honors is continuing to grow with transfer students, and is pleased with the work Admissions has done with the Honors Program.
